A tankless water heater does not store gallons of hot water like a traditional tank. Instead, it heats water on demand as it passes through the unit. A basic flush requires a tankless water heater flush kit or two washing-machine-style hoses, a small submersible pump, a five-gallon bucket, and a descaling solution approved for tankless water heaters. Many homeowners use white vinegar, but manufacturer-approved descaler is usually the safer choice because it is designed to remove mineral buildup without damaging internal components. Avoid harsh chemicals, and never mix cleaning products.
You should also have towels handy. Even when everything goes right, some water will drain from the hoses and service ports. If your unit does not have isolation or service valves, do not force the job. Installing those valves, or having a plumber handle the flush, is the smart move.
How to Flush a Tankless Water Heater Step by Step
Start by turning off the power source to the water heater. For an electric unit, switch off the circuit breaker. For a gas unit, turn off the gas supply according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then close the cold-water supply valve and the hot-water outlet valve. Give the unit time to cool down if it has been running. Hot water and cleaning solution are not a combination you want spraying across a utility room.
Next, open the service ports on the hot and cold isolation valves. Connect one hose from the pump to the cold-water service port. Connect the second hose to the hot-water service port, with its other end placed in the bucket. Fill the bucket with the approved descaling solution. The pump needs to stay submerged during the entire process.
Turn on the pump and circulate the solution through the heater. The cleaning solution enters through the cold side, moves through the internal water passages, and returns through the hot side into the bucket. Most units need roughly 45 to 60 minutes of circulation, but your manufacturer’s manual gets the final say. Do not walk away for an hour and hope for the best. Check the bucket, hoses, and connections occasionally for leaks or a pump that has run dry.
Once the circulation time is complete, turn off the pump. Carefully drain the solution from the bucket following the product label instructions. Then flush the unit with clean water. Keep the hose attached to the hot-water service port and place that hose in an empty bucket or drain. Remove the pump hose from the cold-water service port, then slowly open the cold-water supply valve to send fresh water through the heater and out the hot-side hose.
Run clean water through the system for several minutes, or as long as the manufacturer recommends. This step matters. Leftover descaler or vinegar should not remain in the water heater or travel to your fixtures. When the water runs clear and there is no lingering odor, close the cold-water valve and disconnect both hoses.
Finally, close the service ports securely, reopen the hot-water outlet valve and cold-water supply valve, and check every connection for drips. Restore electrical power or gas only after the water valves are fully open and the unit is properly reassembled. Open a nearby hot-water faucet for a few minutes to purge air from the lines. If the water flows normally and the unit operates without an error code, the job is done.
Do Not Skip the Filter Check
Many tankless water heaters have a small inlet water filter that catches sediment before it enters the unit. It is usually located near the cold-water inlet. While you are already servicing the heater, check that filter and rinse away debris if the manual allows it.
A dirty inlet filter can reduce flow and cause problems that look a lot like scale buildup. It is a small detail, but plumbing is full of small details that turn into big repair bills when nobody checks them.
When DIY Flushing Is Not the Right Call
Flushing a tankless unit can be manageable for a confident homeowner with the right equipment. Still, there are times when calling a licensed plumber is the better decision. Gas connections, electrical components, corroded valves, difficult access, and recurring error codes all deserve professional attention.
Call for help if you see water leaking from inside the unit, smell gas, cannot fully shut off the service valves, or find heavy corrosion around the connections.
